How to make the Faux Whipped Cream Topped Gingerbread Mugs:

Making faux whipped cream topped mugs is surprising simple. With a few items, you can add fake frosting or whipped cream to anything! You will need:

Supplies needed:

Let’s Make the Faux Whipped cream Gingerbread mugs!

Get all of your supplies ready on a big surface and have fun decorating these mugs! If you mess up, simply wipe off the spackle before it dries and start again.

Start with creating a base for the whipped topping:

  1. Flip your mug upside down onto a piece of cardboard (thin cardboard is easier to conceal with the whipped topping) and trace the inner rim of the mug.
  2. Cut out the circle of cardboard and use clear glue to attach it to the top of the mug. Skip this step if you would like the faux whipped topping to be removable.
  3. Cut a foam ball in half and glue it to the center of the cardboard. Allow to dry.

Next, frost the mugs with lightweight spackle:

Frosting these mugs with faux whipped cream is exactly the same as frosting cupcakes, but with a few tweaks. We are using lightweight spackling as our frosting and piping very slowly.

  1. Fill a sturdy piping bag fitted with an open star tip with lightweight spackling. The bags must be durable as it takes more pressure to pipe spackle than regular frosting. I use:
  2. Slowly pipe a spiral of spackle starting at the base of the cardboard moving up and over the foam ball. Moving slowly helps the spackle to ruffle.

Next, decorate the mugs with straws and faux sprinkles:

One of the most fun parts – decorating the whipped cream toppers! I like to use paper straws, beads, buttons, anything that mimics a real cup of hot cocoa.

  • The paper straws: Cut colored paper straws to the desired length and insert them into the wet spackle. I used pink and brown straws to compliment the colors of these mugs.
  • The peppermint sprinkles: For the red and white peppermint sprinkles I used Polymer Soft Clay Slices.
  • The cinnamon: I dusted these mugs with real cinnamon! I anticipate that it will hold up well and gives the exact look I want.

Supplies

Directions

  • Flip the mug upside down onto a piece of cardboard and use a pencil to trace the circumference of opening. Cut out the circle.
  • Glue the cardboard circle onto the top of the mug OR skip this step if making the faux whipped topper removable.
  • Slice a foam ball in half and glue it to the center of the cardboard. Let dry.
  • Fill a piping bag fit with a Wilton 1M piping tip with lightweight spackling. Massage the bag gently to remove any air pockets.
  • Slowly pipe the spackling in a swirl starting from the bottom up to the top of the mug. The slower you go, the more ruffled the piping will look.
  • Decorate the mug with paper straws, faux sprinkles, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. To make the gingerbread “sprinkles” I used acrylic paint to cover Gingerbread man buttons and Clay Gingerbread Man Pieces to make them.
  • Let dry overnight, and put your work on display!

Notes

  • – I recommend DAP brand lightweight spackling. I bought another brand and could not get it to pipe.
  • – If you would like the whipped topper to be removable, do not clue the cardboard onto the mug.
  • – Use a sturdy piping bag to pipe the spackle, as quite a bit more pressure is required than when piping frosting.
