DIY Halloween mugs with faux whipped cream toppers – my favorite spooky decor to put out each year! I have fallen in love with so many Halloween mugs but, to be honest, I don’t drink out of them very often. Turning them into decor is the best of both worlds. The mug gets to be used and enjoyed much more than if it was stored away in a cabinet!
There is something about seeing a mug topped with sky-high whipped cream and sprinkles out on display that makes a room feel that much cozier. A bonus is that they are SUPER simple to make! If you have frosted a cupcake before, this is the same concept, just with spackling!
These faux whipped cream topped mugs make a gorgeous addition to any room and are a creative and unique gift to give this spooky season. It would be so much fun to have friends over for a Halloween mug decorating party!
How to make the Faux Whipped Cream Topped Mugs:
Making faux whipped cream topped mugs is surprising simple. With a few items, you can add fake frosting or whipped cream to anything!
Supplies needed:
- Festive mugs – I found mine at Walmart, Home Goods, and TJ Maxx

- Clear glue
- Lightweight Spackling – I recommend DAP brand (I tried Red Devil and could NOT get it to pipe)
- Piping bags and tips
- Paper straws – orange/black and white/black
- Orange Pumpkin Buttons – and black acrylic paint optional if you want to change their color
- Skull, bat, and spider buttons
- Black bugle beads
Let’s Make the Spooky Faux Whipped cream mugs!
Get all of your supplies ready on a big surface and have fun decorating these mugs! If you mess up, simply wipe off the spackle before it dries and start again.
Start with creating a base for the whipped topping:
- Flip your mug upside down onto a piece of cardboard (thin cardboard is easier to conceal with the whipped topping) and trace the inner rim of the mug.
- Cut out the circle of cardboard and use clear glue to attach it to the top of the mug. Skip this step if you would like the faux whipped topping to be removable.
- Cut a foam ball in half and glue it to the center of the cardboard. Allow to dry.
Next, frost the mugs with lightweight spackling:
Frosting these mugs with faux whipped cream is exactly the same as frosting cupcakes, but with a few tweaks. We are using lightweight spackling as our frosting and piping very slowly.
- Fill a sturdy piping bag fitted with an open star tip with lightweight spackling. The bags must be durable as it takes more pressure to pipe spackle than regular frosting. I recommend:
- Slowly pipe a spiral of spackle starting at the base of the cardboard moving up and over the foam ball. Moving slowly helps the spackle to ruffle.
Next, decorate the mugs with straws and faux sprinkles:
One of the most fun parts – decorating the whipped cream toppers! I like to use paper straws, beads, buttons, anything that mimics a real cup of hot cocoa with sprinkles.
- The paper straws: Cut colored paper straws to the desired length and insert them into the wet spackle. I used orange/black and white/black straws to complement the colors of these mugs.
- The orange pumpkins: I found these Orange Pumpkin Buttons at JoAnn’s and they make the perfect sprinkles! Keep them orange or add two coats of black acrylic paint to change their color.
- The skulls, bats, and spiders: I found these Skull, bat, and spider buttons at Joann’s as well!
- The black jimmy *sprinkles*: These sprinkles are actually black bugle beads!
The pumpkin shaped “sprinkles”:
These pumpkin buttons are absolutely adorable! They come in mini to larger sizes in the pack and each one has it’s own unique face. One of the designs reminds me of Jack Skellington (my favorite buttons of the bunch)!
I found these Orange Pumpkin Buttons at Joann’s and painted some black this year to match the color scheme of the pink pumpkin mugs and white ghosts without clashing. Use a small paintbrush to apply two coats of black acrylic paint to reach side of the button. Allow them to dry, and then use them to decorate the faux whipped toppers!
How to paint the buttons black: Use a small paintbrush to apply two coats of black acrylic paint to each side of the button. Allow them to dry, and then use them to decorate the faux whipped toppers!

These DIY Halloween Mugs with Faux Whipped Cream Toppers are the cutest gifts and decor for spooky season and make such a fun party activity!
Supplies
Festive mugs – I got mine from Walmart, Home Goods, TJ Maxx
Thin cardboard
Foam balls – use a knife to cut in half
Lightweight Spackling – DAP brand
- The decorations and “sprinkles”:
Paper straws – orange/black and white/black
Directions
- Flip the mug upside down onto a piece of cardboard and use a pencil to trace the circumference of opening. Cut out the circle.
- Glue the cardboard circle onto the top of the mug OR skip this step if making the faux whipped topper removable.
- Slice a foam ball in half and glue it to the center of the cardboard. Let dry.
- Fill a piping bag fit with a Wilton 1M piping tip with lightweight spackling. Massage the bag gently to remove any air pockets.
- Slowly pipe the spackling in a swirl starting from the bottom up to the top of the mug. The slower you go, the more ruffled the piping will look.
- Decorate the mug with paper straws, buttons, and beads. To make the black pumpkin “sprinkles” I used two coats of black acrylic paint to cover these orange pumpkin buttons.
- Let dry overnight, and put your work on display!
Notes
- I recommend DAP brand lightweight spackling. I bought Red Devil brand and could not get it to pipe.
- If you would like the whipped topper to be removable, do not clue the cardboard onto the mug.
- Use a sturdy piping bag to pipe the spackle, as quite a bit more pressure is required than when piping frosting.
