Tips for creating a Fun and Colorful Halloween Dessert Board:

  • Play with sizes and textures: Add a variety of cookies and bars that are varied in shape and color for interest.
  • Patterns and design: Try to create patterns with the colors or create shapes that essentially are a mirror image on each side of the board. This helps create balance and is visually pleasing to the eye.
  • Add different festive colored candy: Fill small bowls with candy for a fun twist and to add another element to the shapes and colors on the board.

Take the cookies from the spooky charcuterie board and make gift tins!

Once this board was created, I took festive tins (found at Home Goods and TJ Maxx) and filled them with the goodies! I dropped them off on the porches of friends and family to spread the spookiness as well as deliciousness!

Recipes Used for the Spooky Charcuterie Dessert Board and Tips for Each:

Halloween themed Oreo brownies:

Recipe: Oreo Brownies by Baker by Nature

*Detailed blog post for these brownies linked here: Halloween Oreo Cookie Topped Brownies*

Why I love this recipe: These brownies are exceptionally fudgy and chewy with a crunch from the Oreos and chocolate chips. This recipe is pure bliss. I’ve made the regular recipe and also have made Halloween and Christmas versions. All I can say is you will be SO happy you made this one. They are fantastic freshly baked, refrigerated, or even out of the freezer because you still get the chew of the brownie but the crunch is amplified from the chocolate chips when chilled.

Tips for making the Oreo brownies:

  • Line your baking pan with parchment paper: This helps with easy removal and cleanup
  • Don’t overbake the brownies: If a toothpick comes out completely clean, they’ve been in the oven too long. I love this reference by Recipe for Perfection with a visual image of testing doneness of brownies. Be careful though, your toothpick could hit a chocolate chip and look to be more liquid than it actually is. Test a few spots.
  • Don’t chop the Oreos too small: If you keep some of the Oreos whole, or cut them in half when you press them into the top of the batter, they’ll be sliced into when you cut them up to serve anyway. This way, you can till see some of the fun Halloween images.

Vampire Gingerbread Men and Bats:

Recipe: My Favorite Gingerbread Cookies by Sally’s Baking Addiction.

Check out my Soft Gingerbread Cookies Decorated with Chocolate post for a Christmas version of this recipe!

Why I love this recipe:

  • Make the dough ahead and chill: This dough needs to be chilled and you can make it a few days in advance.
  • The cookies are soft and flavorful: The chew and spice ratio in these gingerbread men is absolutely delicious. They stay fresh for quite some time as well.

Tips for making the vampire gingerbread men and bats:

  • Have fun with the cookie cutters! You could use any shapes you want and make them festive.
  • Use melted chocolate or store bought frosting to decorate.
    • Vampire Gingerbread men decorating tips:
      • To decorate, I used store-bought cookie icing.
      • I piped dots for the eyes and body with the icing
      • For the fangs, I piped a small dot of frosting onto the dried mouth and very carefully dragged it down with a toothpick to make the point of the tooth.
    • Decorating the Bats: I used a bat shaped cookie cutter and used some of the black store-bought icing to act as glue to hold the candy eye sprinkles in place. I couldn’t find a link for the exact bat cookie cutter used – I bought it years ago (I believe at a grocery store),

Mummy Cookies:

Recipe: Chewy Maple Cinnamon Cookies by Cooking with Carlee.

For a white chocolate dipped holiday version, check out my Chewy Maple Cinnamon Cookies with White Chocolate!

Why I love this recipe:

  • It is SO flavorful: I cannot express how much I love these cookies. I’ve been making them for years and even made a Christmas version by dipping them in white chocolate and adding holly berry sprinkles. The maple syrup and extract takes these cookies to a whole other level.
  • They are soft and chewy: This is another recipe that is for those that favor soft and chewy cookies. These also stay fresh for quite some time and freeze well (without the glaze)!

Halloween Chocolate Covered Oreos:

Recipe: Check out my post for Christmas Chocolate Covered Oreos where I go into detail regarding how to make dipped Oreos.

For the pumpkin Oreos I used orange candy melts as the coating, mini chocolate chips for the face, a green leaf sprinkle from a Christmas sprinkle assortment, and a chocolate chunk cut in half for the stem.

The rest of the chocolate Oreos were made with Ghirardellhi melting wafers and various sprinkles!

Festive Halloween Themed Orange, Black, and White M&M cookies:

Recipe: Best Chocolate Chip Cookies by Butternut Bakery

Why I love this recipe:

  • Fast and no chill time: This dough is made without a mixer and doesn’t require overnight chill time
  • They are SO chewy: I love the texture of these cookies! They are chewy and have the perfect balance of a crisp edge with a bendy center. This is my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe to date!
  • Salty and Sweet: Adding the flaky sea salt on top is a must! The combination of the salt, chocolate, and buttery cookie is phenomenal.

Tips for making the Halloween M&M cookies:

  • Make an M&M version: I used the recommended amount of chocolate chip add ins, but substituted some of the semi-sweet chips for white chocolate chips and the limited Cookies and Screem M&Ms.
  • Use a food scale: This ensures all ingredients are in proper ratios and that your dough balls will look and bake uniformly.
